CLEAR CONSCIENCE

Imagine you are a sponsored athlete and receive free clothes from your sportswear brand. You would like to know that your clothes are made by textile workers being paid a living wage. What can you do?

Simple. Donate some of your earnings. Make up the difference between the calculated living wage and the actual wage being paid by your brand for the sports apparel you wear during each season.

SPIRAL BALL 2

When we made our initial prototypes for spiral golf ball we were not completely happy with the process of developing four individual printing moulds applied to the core of the ball to create the 360 degree spiral pattern. Each spiral ball was then completed with a transparent injection moulded dimpled cover.
We our now investigating developing a 2-piece-2-colour injection moulded dimpled cover. This process would allow us to use two separate compounds of material in the cover, instead of the traditional method where a mantle layer is used below the cover to create the required spin / soft feel.
From the picture, the yellow section would be a harder material and the red sections a softer compound to create a 2-piece-2-colour injection moulded dimpled golf ball cover.

PLASTIC SAND

Researcher Servan-Schreiber explains. “This week I’m in Miami and last week I was in Rio, and every beach I go to, all over the world, there are tiny bits of plastic in the sand. And yet kids are playing on it and it’s shocking, in a way, that we are letting kids play on beaches that are actually contaminated.”
Over time, plastic on beaches could potentially leech not only the chemicals used to make the plastic in the first place, but also any additional chemicals accumulated in the ocean. Servan-Schreiber points out that we don’t know what long term exposure may do.
“Because plastic never goes away, at some point, the beaches will be more plastic than sand.”

THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER

PT Nikomas factory in Tangerang, Banten Province, Indonesia. is one of Southeast Asia’s largest garment producers, manufactures goods for Nike, Adidas and Puma.

Factory shifts are supposed to be 10 hours, five days a week, then five hours on the sixth day. But workers routinely were not being paid for additional hours they were made to work each day.

Things are getting better. Factory worker explains; there’s less yelling and calling bad names. … I work in the sewing section, and I’m expected to process 100 shoes per hour. If we don’t meet our quotas, we just get yelled at. Before, they’d be using hands, everything. But now, we just get yelled at. And then the quotas are piled into the next day.”

“The company gives one meal a day, and back then, there were maggots in it sometimes. Now, it just smells bad. There are no longer maggots, but we still can hardly eat it because it stinks. …

PINK AUGUSTA

Many of you will know that Augusta National recently allowed women members. They found themselves in a tricky position when one of their major sponsors happened to have a female CEO and it had been a traditional that these CEO’s were given membership to the previously all male club. Now to encourage more female members at Augusta and other courses Golf Refugees have come up with an idea.

Azaleas are synonymous with Augusta National and they look so beautiful. So why not have pink sand bunkers to match the pink azaleas?

INCONVENIENT

Paraxlene is the main raw ingredient of modern synthetic (polyester) sportswear. So how come there's no mention of it on garment labels or brands web sites or apparel reviews in printed and digital media?
Paraxlene is an aromatic hydrocarbon based on benzene and produced by catalytic reforming of petroleum naphtha as part of the BTX aromatics (benzene, toluene and the xylene isomers). It is also highly flammable.
Is all of this just an inconvenient truth for the sportswear industry?
